Memory, Alzheimer’s and Meditation

It isn’t’ very often that science spends time researching the stuff that we know is beneficial – but it’s really nice when it happens. Some recent research has highlighted the benefits of meditation for memory improvement either due to ageing or the early stages of Alzheimer’s. This seemed really interesting and the meditation technique was new to me so I thought I’d give it a go. This is what I found.

It seems that most people know how to worry. What’s tricky is learning how not to. It is possible not to worry. It is possible to reduce significantly the amount of worrying you do. The less time you spend worrying, the more your mindspace is freed up to engage more fully with your creativity. Overweight – Then It Must Be Your Fault, Mustn’t It?

One of the biggest problems with attempting to lose weight, and continuing to fail to keep up that strict dietary regime, is of blame and guilt. Because on the face of it a diet seems simple, we think we should be able to stick to it. After all it’s just a set of rules designed to keep us well nourished. But time and time again, we fail to stick to the rules. We fail when we are socialising and everyone else is eating heartily, we fail when we are on our own and feeling a little low, we fail when there is nothing stimulating on tv, we fail when we are bombarded with adverts for food… …and then the guilt kicks in and we blame ourselves for having no will power, being stupid, or whatever brand of bad is your current flavour of the month.

Learned Helplessness – Can You Fix It?

There is no question that life can get you down. It can seem that no matter what you do, no matter what you try, you seem to stay just exactly where you are. This is the point at which many people just give up. They stop trying. They stop seeking a solution because it’s easier to accept the suffering than to live in hope. This does not mean there is no solution. It might just mean that you discovered early on in life that giving up was easier than constantly failing. At least that way you can convince yourself that it was just too difficult for you.

You Don’t Have To Gain Weight When You Quit Smoking

Recently published research seems to have proven what smokers fear most – they will get fat if they give up cigarettes. But, as always it pays to have a closer look at what the ‘experts’ seem to be saying. And just remember, there are a lot of people who are fat who don’t smoke, and a lot of people who don’t smoke who are slim. Maybe, just maybe, smoking has nothing to do with it.
